...from Pete French How does one remember Al Lewis, teacher, friend and colleague? I go back to 1949, Mr. Lewis' first year of teaching. I was in his first biology class, and being somewhat obstreperous, I pressed him to discuss sex...in the human way. Well, Mr. Lewis flushed bright red and said that we were only going to discuss sex to the extent of the fetal pig...that's all we really needed to know under the New York State Regents' Curriculum!! Years later at one of our class reunions I encountered Mr. Lewis again and told him that because he refused to tell me about human sexuality, I was personally blaming him for my wife and I having five children in our first seven years of marriage! He laughed and said that Mr. Harris, the High School Principal, had told him in no uncertain terms that if he ever went beyond the "fetal pig" he could forget about getting tenure. I am pleased to say that thanks to Mr. Lewis, I have not nibbled on my wife's earlobe in thirty-five years...and we have not had any more children!! What a teacher!!! We love, and will miss a dedicated educator who graced us for over half a century in the Brighton community. Henry "Pete" French, Jr. October 31, 2001 |
