Balloon Experiment Equipment for Science Research Club
The BHS Science Research Club tackled the engineering challenges of sending a camera into the atmosphere.
Before sending balloons to photograph the curve of the earth, the students had to calculate how to get the balloons to take the cameras high enough and aim them properly, how to get parachutes to open and bring the cargo back, how to avoid active airspace or landing in Lake Ontario, how to keep the cameras and GPS locators warm so their batteries would work despite the frigid thin atmosphere, and how to protect the cameras through the journey and landing.
And everything worked! Both camera packages were successfully retrieved with video displaying the curvature of the earth, and the equipment survived for use in future projects.
