"Journey Through Dreaming"
Graphite and Colored-Pencil Drawing by Marie Barreto
2010 D. Bradley Smith Art Purchase Award Winner

Photo of the Artwork

Photo of the Artist Marie Barreto is an artist at ease with creating in a multitude of mediums and formats. During her years at Brighton High School she has explored photography, ceramics, drawing, and painting, expressing her ideas and mastering many skills and techniques.

The D. Bradley Smith Art Purchase award was presented to Marie for her graphite and colored-pencil drawing entitled Journey Through Dreaming, created as part of her Portfolio Preparation class. In this case the title was of great importance because the assignment required that she select words from two columns to come up with a title before starting the piece. Marie's journey through dreaming led her to a surrealistic approach that she was exploring in photography class as well. She envisioned a staircase and path leading to a door in an environment of carefully shaded globes of analogous colors. Not only did the design and concept work well, but it was technically executed with precision and care.

This piece is characteristic of the thought and careful execution Marie exhibits in all her work. It was these characteristics, as well as her willingness to take and offer constructive criticism, that made her an asset in all her art classes. Marie has a mature way of reflecting on her work and the work of others around her which makes her opinion highly regarded by her peers. Her planning, experimentation, understanding of color, and mastery of technical skills position her well for the future.

In the fall, Marie will be a photo student at Rochester Institute of Technology, where no doubt she will continue to grow as an artist.
