3-D Work by Zoleigh Borg
2022 D. Bradley Smith Art Purchase Award Winner
Zoleigh Borg's 3-D piece titled "Soulmates" is about the ties that connect one person to another. Although different cultures will reference the idea of a string connecting soulmates, in Zoleigh's work the connections that lead soulmates to recognize each other cannot be represented simply by one string, but by many. The intertwined strings that attach these beautifully formed clay hands together are an expression of the complex relationship of soulmates.
Zoleigh has many interests and came late to art. Although exposed through her best friend who was excellent at drawing, she didn't see that talent in herself and so she pursued other things. It was later that she realized that she responded to tactile elements and the idea of 3-D shapes. She began exploring this interest by digging the clay so readily available in Brighton's ground and making small figures, mostly female forms. She then took a Memorial Art Gallery class in sculpting.
For her, the most important thing about her art is the story, and she expresses stories in the forms she creates. After spending time on female figures, she began to sculpt hands.
Zoleigh has many other interests in addition to art. She has been a speaker on the issue of sexual assault. She has served as the stage manager during plays. For athletics, she skates in roller derby. And she has a passion for writing.
At college she plans to major in English and Cultural Anthropology, and she plans to become a writer.
