Ceramic Vase

2016 D. Bradley Smith Art Purchase Award Winner
Ffion's passion for art started years ago. Her first exposure to ceramics came at twelve when she and her father took a course together at the Memorial Art Gallery. They both enjoyed this experience tremendously and Ffion was hooked. Their excitement was contagious; soon the whole family did ceramics together. In fact they maintain a family shelf for the projects they've created at the Genesee Center for the Arts.
Last summer Ffion attended the studio art camp at Nazareth College. In addition to ceramics, Ffion draws, paints, and does photography. This year she did an Advanced Placement Independent Study in 2D Studio Art.
Fion's love of ceramics is demonstrated by the fact it has become typical for her to spend three hours a day in the school's ceramics room. She even comes in to work during school breaks, a credit to her dedication and also that of her Brighton teacher, Katie Maley. One of her major projects this year was the creation of a life size sculpture of a sitting female nude.
Despite all the hours in the ceramics studio, Ffion finds time for other activities. She plays guitar and is the lead singer in the local student band, Lonely Road. She served as the captain of Brighton's varsity Girls Swimming and Diving team. As a swimmer, she qualified for the NYSPHSAA state championship meet this year where she competed on a relay team. And active in Girl Scouts since 4th grade, she has come all the way through the ranks of scouting to achieve scouting's adult rank.
This fall Ffion will enroll at Alfred University, the #1 ranked school for ceramics in the nation, to study ceramics and art education.
