Painting by Maddie Hood
2022 D. Bradley Smith Art Purchase Award Winner
Maddie Hood's arresting piece "Xenophobia" builds on a theme that Maddie, who came to the United States as an adoptee from Korea, has been exploring in her art for a long time. The piece possesses an unsettling energy. Startlingly realistic eyes look directly at the viewer from three ominously dark highly textured facial shapes. Maddie has made other pieces on this issue, and she credits her experience in AP Studio Art with giving her opportunities to pursue this interest more deeply.
Maddie has always been personally driven to make art, starting as a young child working with varied art kits. At the current time her focus is 2-D pieces in various media, including collage. She enjoys sharing her talents with children and has worked as a nanny and a camp counselor.
In addition to art, Maddie is interested in music. She plays guitar and piano and writes songs.
Maddie plans to major in art education at SUNY New Paltz.
