Pencil and Ink Drawing by Zoe Sussman
2023 D. Bradley Smith Art Purchase Award Winner
Zoe's pencil and ink drawing of flying fish is representative of the fanciful drawings Zoe loves to create. Imagining something and then being able to draw it is a happy challenge for Zoe.
Beginning when she was a young child, Zoe's grandfather would draw pictures for her, a seemingly magical ability. Inspired, she wanted to be able to make pictures, too. Initially frustrated by her limited skills, she persisted and as she moved through elementary school her skills improved. Zoe uses her desire to be the best at what she does as motivation to work harder.
Although Zoe regards her long interest in drawing as the foundation of her skills, she has taken advantage of Brighton's varied art classes such as jewelry making, advanced drawing and painting, and AP Studio art.
In addition to art, Zoe is interested in learning about all aspects of the natural world and is concerned with social justice and civil rights issues. She enjoys meeting and talking with people who have different ideas from her.
Zoe will attend Alfred University to major in art next fall and she hopes to do work that impacts the world.
